Sara Krause, Ceramics, Jewelry

Marion, Iowa

Sara is a mother of two and elementary art teacher. A Coe College graduate, she majored in art with an emphasis in ceramics.

In her home studio she creates wheel-thrown and hand-built pottery, including functional and decorative items. Sara’s designs are often whimsical and colorful. She is inspired by nature, animals, love of travel, and the interests of her youthful students.

Sara incorporates a variety of textures, such as hand-carved, stamped, and implied, as well as sculptural elements. Her collection includes a variety of Raku pieces, an ancient Japanese tradition in which pots are removed from firing at roughly 1,750 degrees and either quenched in water, smoldered in a fire pit (American Raku), or decorated with horse hair (Horsehair Raku).

“The unpredictability of this technique results in pieces that are truly one of a kind. This process could be described as daring, as I interact with my pieces at such high heat. The unpredictability and rarity of success drives me to push the envelope with my raku pieces, striving to test the limits of my design capabilities.”
