Priscilla Steele, Printmaker
Marion, Iowa
Priscilla was raised in New Jersey between New York and Philadelphia, exposing her to a large, exciting cosmopolitan world.
With the promise of extensive work abroad, she chose to study at St. Lawrence University in upstate New York. Four years later she had a productive academic year in Europe where she gain an intellectual foothold and appreciation for the major shifts within Western Art. She developed a strong interest in drawing and printmaking.
After graduation she moved to the Midwest where she balanced printing and drawing with theatrical design and painting. She ultimately obtained an MFA from the University of Iowa in printmaking.
“Manipulating the materials of drawing and printmaking has provided me with the tools for exploring the most basic aspects of my humanity — its beauty and complexity. The scope of this exhilarating ‘hard task’ has proven to be lifelong. I aspire to the excellence of so many geniuses throughout time. Their work, my chosen tools, and my own labor have given me access to the most elusive of moments in which I create images that share the significance of my experience with others. These are the moments that indeed make me whole.”
