Alex Schmiechen, Ceramics
Cedar Rapids, Iowa
Alex creates functional ceramic work with an attention to surface decoration. A Minnesota native, she attended Grinnell College, majoring in Biochemistry. As an undergraduate she was also able to explore her interest in the arts by using the student-run ceramics studio and taking art classes.
Alex has always been drawn to the art world and creative self expression. Soon after college, she rediscovered her love for clay and made a career pivot from Science to Ceramics. She spent time learning and teaching ceramics at various community organizations while exploring her own artistic style. Her business, Cabyn Fever Ceramics, operates from her home studio where she wheel throws and hand builds a variety of functional forms such as mugs, planters, and earrings.
“I love the process of making pottery. It’s so satisfying to explore and perfect methods of creating different forms. My pots are also a great interactive canvas on which to play with colors and pattern. My decorations are inspired by the night sky, beloved animals, plant life, and historically feminine crafts such as quilting. I hope that people can sprinkle my work throughout their everyday lives and it will give them a sense of pause and wonder.”
