Al is a self-taught master of woodworking, who specializes in creating products from valuable trees which were felled during the historic derecho of 2020 which swept through eastern Iowa and beyond. All has a keen eye of mixing such woods as cherry, maple, walnut, oak to create functional art. A signature style of Al’s is, on occasion, to incorporate intensely colored expoxy into his product.

“I create through experimentation. I take joy in reclaiming the damaged wood and making it into something beautiful and useful.”

Custom Created Cutting Boards utilizing wood reclaimed from the 2020 derecho. Primarily walnut, oak, cherry, maple, sometimes colored epoxy is added for creative highlight. Boards may include handles, beveled edges, varying sizes. Since Al joined the Abbe Creek Gallery in spring, 2025, he has created 28 boards, all have sold, usually within a day or two from his delivery. Al’s a good-hearted artist that creates for the love of creating.
