I work across mediums because no single material is patient enough to hold everything I want to say. Sometimes I draw. Sometimes I build. Sometimes I chase the light around with a camera like it owes me something.
My influences are slippery. They include weather, folklore, the shimmer of light on old walls, conversations overheard in unfamiliar languages, that familiar smell you cannot quite name, and wildflowers growing where they have no business growing. Through my work, I hope to create a connection with the viewer. I want people not just to see the work, but to feel it, and to discover something of their own within it.
I am a 1990 graduate of Cornell College where I majored in Art. My senior thesis was in photography. I also have Masters and Education Specialists degrees from The University of Iowa. I have traveled throughout the United States, Central America, the Caribbean and spent significant time in rural France. I have exhibited in both the United States and France.
“An artist should be taking risks. That’s the whole idea of being an artist.” — JR, French Artist
