Born and raised on an Iowa farm, Dean started film photography in 1948 as a self- taught artist. Photography was a hobby until 2000 when he went digital with a Nikon DSLR, opening a new digital world for him. Dean has competed in the Iowa State Fair Photography Salon, Silos and Smokestacks and Make Iowa Beautiful contests. He had solo exhibits at University of Iowa, Cornell College, Maquoketa Art Experience, The Opera House Gallery, DKW Gallery, Artist Sanctuary, & local offices, hospitals and a work at the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art. He also showed in numerous regional art shows since 2013.

“I see things that call to me, beautiful, special, and meaningful things that I capture and preserve for others to see. Sometimes the light, the scope, the beauty I see, cannot be captured, even with today’s technology, but I am compelled to try. I shoot raw format, giving me a Digital Negative that I develop in Lightroom and Photoshop. Lightroom is my darkroom.”
